PAHANG MALAYSIA

Welcome to Janda Baik

Selamat Datang means welcome in Bahasa Malay. One gets more than that when they visit this Malay Kampong (village) nestled in the rain forest mountains outside of Kuala Lumpur. A trip to Janda Baik resort is an experience one will not forget.
One advantage of this area is that it is developed much yet. Only 1,000 people of tribal backgrounds live in the village. The locals even offer home stay so you can really know the people and understand the culture. From Kuala Lumpur it takes just 45 minutes in a car or bus.
The village got its name from a warrior long ago who stopped at the village during some fighting. He was helped by a kind good widow, and the mercenary warrior never forgot her. So the name Janda Baik means good widow.
The culture of the aboriginal people of the area is fascinating. One can study and visit a museum called Arang Asli, for a side trip one day. This museum has all the history of the area, plus fine exhibits of their early bamboo huts, hunting tools, costumes and clothing.
The main attraction of the area is the pristine rainforest that cradles many small rivers, waterfalls and caves. The area is so laid back that some people nickname it, timeless tranquility. The area is crisscrosssed with walkways, meandering roads, all amidst the myriad of ferns, bamboo and gigantic trees.
A stunning waterfalls called Ulu Tampit is withing a short hike of the village. It has seven different levels and one can walk up to all of them in a short time. The water is refreshing and many large trees shade the path. Another watering spot is Palau Santap, where two rivers meet. A good place for a picnic or just splashing around for relaxation.
The tallest mountain in the province is called Mount Nuang, and this is a trekkers delight. But it does take 11 hours and can be steep, but there are rest stops and places to camp along the way. It is as beautiful as it is treacherous, with amazing stands of bamboo, ground orchids, and towering hardwood trees.
If one is still looking for more adventure then go the elephant conservation camp that has rescued and is protecting the local elephant population. But the feeding, bathing and riding time is from 14:00 to 15:45. By trail it is 40 kilometers, so best to take a four wheel vehicle.
Sometimes the best things in life are free. The serene quiet and gurgling streams are a great escape from city life, and hectic travel plans. Many people come to this remote relaxed area just for the solitude and to appreciate nature.
There are varied type of accommodations from the local homestays that were already mentioned to large villas that sleep a group of 20 to 50 people. Many resorts and adventure camps offer one day package tours for hiking or four wheel drive experiences. It has become a popular spot for backpackers, because of all the mountain trails, rivers, waterfalls and camping areas.
Some people say that Janda Baik Resort is the worlds best kept secret. It has not been over developed and is not filled with tourist buses on the weekends. So for the real nature lovers it is a must see place. For more information look at th.tripadvisor.com/janda_baik
